MARKET MAP / SECTOR ETFS

Read the market by sector

Eleven liquid S&P 500 sector funds, compared with SPY, plus separate gold, broad-commodity and oil proxies. A sector trend is supporting context for a stock decision, never an automatic entry.

01 / S&P 500

The eleven sectors

All eleven Select Sector SPDR funds passed an indicative $100m average daily dollar-turnover screen over the 20 sessions ending 9 October 2026. That selection check is dated; current turnover and price dates appear below.

“Leading” means above its 50-day average and ahead of SPY over both 20 and 60 sessions. “Lagging” is the reverse. “Improving” means above the 50-day average and ahead over five sessions, without the full leadership test. Other combinations are mixed. A date mismatch is never promoted to a current reading.

02 / OUTSIDE THE INDEX

Commodity context

These funds are not S&P 500 sectors. They help test inflation, input-cost and defensive narratives. Their fund structure and futures roll can make returns differ from the spot commodity.

03 / SAM'S PORTFOLIO CHECK

Use sector evidence without crowding the book

A stock can be attractive on its own chart while the portfolio is already full of similar risk. Sam should check this before proposing any new simulated holding.

  1. Count names first. At most 2 open stocks in the same GICS sector. A third name is a holdout, even if its ETF leads. Count proposed fills against existing holdings before the next open.
  2. Check size and loss budget. Keep a sector at or below 25% of portfolio equity by gross notional and 1.5% of equity by combined entry-to-original-stop risk. Use the stricter constraint.
  3. Demand both views. A current leading ETF can support a stock setup only when the stock has its own verified 4H trigger, dated news and acceptable risk. A lagging ETF calls for a written exception or no new entry; it is not by itself an exit instruction.
  4. Respect clusters. Review industry overlap inside a sector, particularly semiconductors. Existing holdings above the new cap are frozen for additions and reviewed with dated decisions; no sale is backdated or automatic.

This selection rule governs future model proposals. It is not a broker control or an automated rebalance. Sam must record the sector ETF date, portfolio counts, notional, stop-risk and any exception with each proposed fill.
