WEEK IN REVIEW · 5–9 October 2026

Week in review

Large-cap equities finished the week higher, but leadership was uneven. Friday’s available data produced candidate networking, software and storage setups. The separate daily brief uses Friday’s completed US session and discloses the source gaps.

Large caps advance; small caps lag

For the week, the S&P 500 gained 1.2%, the Dow 0.9% and the Nasdaq Composite 0.6%; the Russell 2000 lost 0.9%, according to AP. The Nasdaq Composite is not the Nasdaq-100 benchmark used by this portfolio. 2026-10-09 · Source

Interpretation: positive headline indexes do not demonstrate broad participation. Our separate price-only SPY/QQQ overlay is risk-on, with breadth and credit coverage still incomplete.

Technology leadership is selective

Reuters described Thursday’s chip weakness alongside AI financing concerns and higher oil. Company-specific infrastructure adoption still matters, while several semiconductor holdings remain technically weaker. 2026-10-09 · Source

Interpretation: distinguish customer evidence from enthusiasm about AI spending. A positive index regime does not repair a failed stock breakout. This is a qualitative sector review, not a measured sector-return ranking.

Earnings and inflation take centre stage

Reuters reported that attention is turning to third-quarter earnings and next week’s inflation releases. On Friday, communication services was the only declining S&P sector. These are dated market observations; the newsletter does not infer a policy decision from them. 2026-10-09 · Source

Interpretation: next week’s releases can challenge both growth expectations and valuations. Keep a competing rates-driven explanation beside an earnings-driven bullish case.

Utility operations face storm risk

Duke Energy (DUK, Utilities) describes preparations for potential damage and outages from Hurricane Isaias. The checked update does not quantify an earnings loss. 2026-10-09 · Source

Interpretation: a defensive sector still has company-specific operational risk.

Friday’s new research and next week

Ciena (CIEN, Technology), ServiceNow (NOW, Technology) and NetApp (NTAP, Technology) add fresh Friday breakout evidence. Core Scientific (CORZ, Technology) retains a bearish breakdown, while Duke Energy (DUK, Utilities) remains a prior bullish reference setup. Full charts, company news, competing interpretations and risks are in the separate daily brief.

Scheduled: September CPI on October 14 and PPI on October 15, each at 13:30 UK time. The next FOMC meeting is October 27–28. Price performance only; no dividends or cash interest. Recorded transaction and borrow charges deducted; pending borrow charges must be reconciled. Before taxes. Benchmark ETF proxies, not official index total returns. Insufficient history; excess return is not risk-adjusted alpha. Sam’s reviewed stop/target changes take effect at the next trading-session opening; original levels and dated revisions are retained. Stop/target flags are closing-price observations, not fills. Gaps may exceed stops. The existing CDNS trade is excluded.

Sam’s portfolio decisions

Prospective decisions recorded 2026-10-10T05:37:44.689Z. These update the allocation decision, not the earlier chart snapshot. A selection is booked at the next audited US opening within its stated entry range.

Ciena Corp (CIEN)Technology · Communication EquipmentSELECTED · 1 UNIT · NEXT OPENING$446.04–$454.00$421.11 / $523.53Select one unit for Monday: volume-confirmed bull-flag breakout, rising recent trendlines and bullish MACD. Openreach customer adoption is concrete support. Stop421.11 and target523.53 give approximately2.1:1 even at454 maximum entry. RSI70, nearby454.36 resistance and AI infrastructure correlation limit this to one unit after the50% gross threshold. OCP product-event risk and incomplete next-earnings-date coverage are acknowledged; not falsely marked event-free.
Core Scientific, Inc. Common Stock (CORZ)Technology · Software - InfrastructureNOT SELECTED FOR PORTFOLIO——Technical breakdown compared, but no short selected: borrow availability, annual rate, margin and dividend obligations are not verified. Broad equity trend is risk-on; counter-regime short needs those checks plus relative-weakness conviction.
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK)Utilities · Utilities - Regulated ElectricMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 1 UNIT$113.87–$116.50$113.29 / $127.26Retain one unit:116.66 remains above113.865 trigger and113.29 stop. Falling100/200 averages and bearish RSI divergence compete with the breakout; hurricane restoration risk is verified but financial damage is unquantified. Keep127.26 target and no addition.
Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc (HLT)Consumer Cyclical · LodgingMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 2 UNITS$322.56–$325.00$316.04 / $342.99Retain two units after the verified October9 opening.326.58 remains above the rising triangle breakout. Raise stop prospectively to318.950012 using the newer confirmed opposite pivot, effective October12 opening; preserve original342.99 target. Travel/oil sensitivity remains. No backdated reduction of historical risk.
ServiceNow Inc (NOW)Technology · Software - ApplicationSELECTED · 1 UNIT · NEXT OPENING$139.69–$142.00$133.47 / $154.29Select one unit for Monday: completed neckline breakout at139.69, bullish MACD and RSI60.5 support reversal continuation toward154.29, with133.47 structural stop. Recent broker target increases are context, not the trigger. No volume confirmation and142.51 resistance are the strongest cautions. October28 earnings are officially scheduled. A one-unit starter adds software exposure while controlling the existing AI correlation.
NetApp Inc (NTAP)Technology · Software - InfrastructureNOT SELECTED FOR PORTFOLIO——Valid triggered bull flag, not selected for an additional allocation: RSI71.7 and32.7% extension above the4H SMA200 imply greater pullback risk. Prefer volume-confirmed Ciena and less stretched ServiceNow within this batch. Evercore upgrade is supportive, but the mixed7 Buy/6 Hold snapshot is not independent price confirmation. October9 dividend record date is not a prospective entitlement.
Astera Labs, Inc. (ALAB)Technology · SemiconductorsMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 1 UNIT$360.13–$384.30$342.00 / $447.85Maintain the October 9 discretionary exit decision: Friday342.05 remains below the367.85 original breakout and almost at342 stop; bearish MACD and RSI46 support deterioration. Aries7 product news does not restore price confirmation. Exit price convention remains pending, so the position and its marked loss remain in the ledger; no invented exit.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD)Technology · SemiconductorsMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 1 UNIT$627.19–$653.40$596.07 / $739.46Retain one unit without adding:608.09 remains above596.07 structural stop, but below627.18 former breakout with bearish MACD and RSI48. A weak failed-retest alternative is serious; positive broker targets do not cancel it. Reassess on a further completed-close breakdown; original levels retained.
NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA)Technology · SemiconductorsMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 2 UNITS$231.00–$241.00$227.02 / $263.84Retain two units without adding:229.34 is above227.025 structural stop but below230.96 original trigger. Bearish MACD and RSI47 argue against increasing semiconductor exposure. The science-funding announcement is not new sales. Current levels retained.
Amazon.com Inc (AMZN)Consumer Cyclical · Internet RetailMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 1 UNIT$251.88–$258.00$244.73 / $320.68Retain one unit:262.48 sustains the251.87 triangle breakout and244.725 stop. Consumer-device news has no quantified earnings effect. Technology correlation still argues against another unit.
Generac Holdings Inc (GNRC)Industrials · Specialty Industrial MachineryMODEL ENTRY RECORDED · 1 UNIT$209.04–$225.50$201.95 / $266.86Retain one unit:225.03 remains above209.03 trigger and201.95 stop. Recent attributed upgrade/initiation are supportive but not sales evidence. Current issuer-news retrieval failed; coverage limitation retained. No new exposure; target266.86 retained.
